چکیده
Observations of the afterglows of γ-ray bursts (GRBs) have revealed that they lie at cosmological distances, and so correspond to the release of an enormous amount of energy. The nature of the central engine that powers these events and the prompt γ-ray emission mechanism itself remain enigmatic because, once a relativistic fireball is created, the physics of the afterglow is insensitive to the nature of the progenitor. Here we report the discovery of linear polarization in the prompt γ-ray emission from GRB021206, which indicates that it is synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons in a strong magnetic field. The polarization is at the theoretical maximum, which requires a uniform, large-scale magnetic field over the γ-ray emission region. A large-scale magnetic field constrains possible progenitors to those either having or producing organized fields. We suggest that the large magnetic energy densities in the progenitor environment (comparable to the kinetic energy densities of the fireball), combined with the large-scale structure of the field, indicate that magnetic fields drive the GRB

Observations by the RHESSI satellite of large polarization of the prompt γ-ray emission from the Gamma Ray Burst GRB0212206 (Coburn & Boggs 2003) imply that the magnetic field coherence scale is larger than the size of the visible emitting region, ∼ R/Γ, where R is the radius of the flow, Γ is the associated Lorentz factor. Such fields cannot be generated in a causally disconnected, hydrodynami...

We expect that at least one Gamma-Ray Burst per month will be detected in the field of view of INTEGRAL instruments and localized with an accuracy of a few arcminutes. IBIS (the Imager on board INTEGRAL) will be the most sensitive instrument in the soft γ-ray band during the next few years. This will allow INTEGRAL to detect the faintest (and hence the most distant) γ-ray bursts, thus surely co...

We present Swift-UVOT data on the optical afterglow of the X-ray flash of 2005 April 6 (XRF 050406) from 88 s to ∼ 10 5 s after the initial prompt γ-ray emission. Our observations in the V, B and U bands are the earliest that have been taken of an XRF optical counterpart. Combining the early-time optical temporal and spectral properties with γ-and simultaneous X-ray data taken with the BAT and ...

We show that a significant fraction of the energy of a γ-ray burst (GRB) is probably converted to a burst of 1017–1019 eV neutrinos and multiple GeV γ’s that follow the main GRB by ∼ 10 s. If GRB’s accelerate protons to ∼ 1020 eV, a suggestion that recently gained support from observations of GRB afterglow, then both the neutrinos and the gammas may be detectable.
